With the collapse of the upper Finian nobility, much of the nation has descended into petty violence, factionalism and provincialism. The lack of centralized authority has been filled of late with a series of Lord-Regents with tenuous political power and more recently by the pretender to the throne, Ernst Goddard, who sought and gained foreign recognition for his rule rather the consent of the nobility. The decline in suitable bloodlines threw power away from the nobility and into the hands of the army, which is now independently contracted at great cost to the civilian government. Meanwhile, the civilian government is enjoying a respite from the constant involvement of corrupt nobles and is running more efficiently and independently than ever before.
